"Astronauts in Love"

Wednesday February 7 2007 by Dan Beyer

Surviving the Space Community.

By now we have all heard about the Astronaut in the love triangle attempted murder charge case.

A Married mother-of-three Lisa Nowak, 43, has been charged with attempted murder following an extraordinary attempt to kidnap a rival for the love of a space shuttle pilot. She faced court in shackles after driving 900 miles from Houston to Orlando wearing a diaper so that she didn't have to stop for bathroom breaks. Astronauts wear diapers routinely during lift-off and re-entry. There are a lot of raised eyebrows surrounding these diapers. Far from being weird, the diapers underscore the peculiarities of the "Engineers" Village that Lisa inhabits. These are NOT your everyday diapers; this was a NASA "Space Diaper"! This little fact serves to highlight the space community that comprises the rarified atmosphere of the society that Lisa developed her perspective and mature adult personality within.

Remember, Lisa, now referred to as "Nowacko" is an Astronaut who flew on the Discovery space shuttle in 2006. After lengthy and severe testing and evaluation, she has been certified as the best of the best, the quintessential top of the American gene pool. Every 2 years 3500 applicants compete for 20 positions. Lisa applied 6 times and eventually survived the culling of the herd. I'm sure that she was poked and prodded inexorably as every type of test was administered prior to and during her tenure at NASA. Not the least of these protocols is psychological testing and evaluation.

Therefore we are left with the assumption that either the tests are flawed or that something happened to change Lisa's demeanor subsequent to her flight in the last Discovery mission. Odds are that something gave way in Lisa's psyche. The everyday stress that she must’ve endured can be assumed to be enormous. I’m sure that the "system" will take this all into account during the evaluation sure to be given to her going forward. If this could occur under the watchful eye of NASA what can we assume about other less controlled public positions, such as those in the executive branch of government? There is no psychological testing required to be POTUS!

Pardon my paranoia but judging by current events it seems to me extremely likely that the top leadership of this nation has also suffered a series of psychological breaks. It would certainly explain a lot of the ineptitude apparent lately.
